In any sport, a player must be fit in order to bring out his or her competitiveness and beat their opponents. By being fit, you will be able to run faster, jump higher, throw things farther and have more stamina. So, just how does being physically fit improve the way you play ping pong?

When you are a beginner, being physically fit isn’t that important in table tennis. It is fun and there is little or no competitive atmosphere when you play. You just have fun and hit some balls around. Nobody cares. All you need to have in a beginner level is that you should be able to climb a flight of stairs without looking like a wheezing blob when you reach the top.

Basically, it will depend on the level you are in when it comes to playing ping pong.

When you reach the intermediate level, you will see that physical fitness will become more important when playing ping pong. Your opponents will be better when it comes to placing shots on different parts of the table, and you will be balancing and shifting your weight at lot, not to mention the amount of footwork you will go through.

Scoring points is also tougher here and you will need to be stronger in order to give your opponent that point winning drive.

If you get to the advanced level in ping pong, you really need to be physically fit. You will go through long rallies and long rallies mean long games. You have to have a lot of stamina as well as get your muscles to develop in order to prevent burning oxygen while your muscles contract.

To become physically fit in playing table tennis, here are a few aerobic and anaerobic exercises and workouts that you can do.

The first exercise is walking. This is a low impact exercise, and it is also a great way to shed off those extra pounds as well as improve your blood circulation. Improved blood circulation means more oxygen will be delivered to various parts of the body which means more stamina.

You can also start working out on a stationary bicycle. This will not only increase your stamina, but it will also make your leg and thigh muscles stronger especially if you increase the resistance level of the machine. Stronger leg muscles will mean better balance and better footwork when playing table tennis.

For weight training, you may want to try the machines for leg presses and leg crunches. Abdominal exercises are also a must as your swings will be more powerful as the strength of the swings you make will start at your abs. Your biceps and triceps should also be developed in order to provide more strength to your swings.

These are the exercises that you should do in order to become physically fit to play competitive ping pong. As you can see, being physically fit means a lot in table tennis. With it, you will be able to retain your balance effectively, have stronger swings, and you will also have better stamina to give you the edge against your opponents.
