Ping Pong Strokes: How You Can Improve Your Backhand Topspin

Ping Pong

Usually, ping pong players have a weak backhand. It is very awkward and it doesn’t necessarily produce as much power as the forehand. If you are one of the many ping pong players who have a weak backhand, here is a way you can improve and make this weakness your strength.

First of all, if you want additional power to your backhand, you will want to improve your backhand topspin. It will give the ball a lot of spin, which will give it that extra power when it lands in your opponent’s side of the table.

In order to improve your backhand topspin, the first thing that you need to do is achieve the proper position to hit a backhand topspin.

Usually, the best position to execute a backhand topspin is at the left side of the table (for right handed players) so you should be 50 to 100 centimeters away from the table.

The position of your legs is also very important as this will be your balance and this is also where you will control your weight. Improper position of your feet will potentially get you off balanced and it will also decrease your reaction time in case the ball was returned by your opponent.

The correct position of the feet when hitting a backhand topspin is that the legs should be parallel to the table. The knees should also bend at about 120 degrees. Also, your legs should be opened by at least a little more than the width of your shoulder. Your trunk should also be slightly bent forward.

When the ball is coming, your paddle should already be at your knee height ready to hit the ball. The backhand side of the paddle should be parallel to the floor and your forearms should form a 140 degree angle with the arm.

As mentioned before, your legs should be in correct position in order for it to get equal body weight as you execute the backhand topspin.

At this position, you should now move the paddle to form a forward clockwise movement.

The contact of the paddle with the ball is also an important factor. As much as possible, the contact should take place as the ball begins to fall.

After the contact, the swing of the paddle should continue up until your arms are now parallel to your shoulder and that the paddle is parallel to the eye.

These are the things that you should do in order to improve your backhand topspin. By remembering this, you will be able to make your backhand a powerful weapon whenever you play ping pong with your friends and also in competitions.
